Lolita's Personality

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

These plans were too late to save the whale who died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
